Pen and Ink Layered Stippling
I use technical pens for this effect. I have several different size pen tips, and use acrylic permanent inks. The example below, titled "Sinningia 'Mini Sinn'" took 30 and a half hours to complete. The process is to apply layers of evenly placed dots of several colors, and as the layers are built up, a richness and depth is achieved. I find this method, although time and labor intensive, to be one of the best ways to show detail in color pen and ink work. In this particular piece, I may continue to adjust the color of the blossom to a slightly more mauve color. This is easy to achieve by layering the smallest size dots in a blue shade. Gouache was used only on the pistil, the stamens, and the flower center on the top left. Over time and with practice, it becomes easier to know which combinations of color layers will achieve the effect desired.
