( Some) Colored Pencil Setsavailable from art supply storesArt supply stores online don't always have good photos of the larger pencil sets. Below are some photos of a few of my own sets. These are all wax-based, non-watercolor pencils. The three sets listed below retail for about the same amount - note that the Derwent set has 60 pencils, while the others have 120, but the Derwent Signature pencils are completely lightfast.
Derwent Signature 60 pencil set in wood box. Derwent Signature pencils are the top of the line as far as lightfastness, as far as I can tell. This is a beautiful set, the box is extremely well-made, with a wooden tilt pencil holder for the pencils, and a spare compartment for other small items. The brochure included lists all the pencils, their pigments, lightfastness - really a lot of information. Out of the pencils I use, Signatures are the hardest in the lead, making them very nice for detail as well as for hatched drawings, but a little more difficult for heavy burnishing. The full Derwent line of products can be seen here.
Caran D'Ache Pablo 120 pencil set in tin. Pablo pencils are very nice pencils, and although the 120 color set isn't in a wood box, the tin is very nice, and the way it is designed allows for portability of the pencils. There are three interior trays, each separated by foam. The brochure included with the set was not for Pablo pencils, but I emailed Caran D'Ache and within a couple of days I had a complete brochure that included a full color chart. It did not include extensive lightfastness information. Pablo pencils fall in between the Signatures and the Prismacolors in lead hardness - they are soft enough to burnish with, but not quite as soft as Prismacolors.
Prismacolor 120 Artist's Soft Lead pencil set in wood box. Prismacolors are very popular, and this wood box set is very nice. The box is slightly large, but still portable. It has flocking-lined (faux-velvet) trays that have ridges for holding the individual pencils. The brochure is really just a label on the top, but it does have a color chart. I can't find current information on the new Premier pencils and the lightfastness of Prismacolors in general. They do have a website listed in a Premier package of 12 pencils, www.prismacolor.com , but it is not fully functional as of this writing. Although I'm not happy about the lack of information on lightfastness of the pigments, the softness of these pencils makes them a favorite of mine.
