Initial drawing  and three background layers - at 2 hours

Five background layers -  at 4 hours

These layers have been added by painting hatchmarks in all different directions, allowing the layers underneath to show through.

At 6 hours

A layer of violet was loosely hatched over the previous layers of red-orange and yellow, and a shadow has been started using blue.  I layered the violet in now because a portion of the orchid is a deep red-violet, and by having this color in the background, even when covered with other layers, it serves to "tie" the painting together.  A final layer would have to be much more precisely hatched in order to really appear to be finished.  By leaving the underlying layers more open, there will be more of each color showing in the final layer, adding to the depth of the painting.  I will now hatch yellow over the violet background, working toward the final background layer.  The two scans directly above also illustrate how a background color can greatly change the appearance of the main subject.

At 8 hours -

At this point, three more layers of yellow have been applied to the background, one medium layer that covers the whole surface, and both a lighter and a darker layer in two different areas.  The shadow has been covered by one layer of the darkest yellow, and the overall depth is starting to really be apparent.  The underlying violet layer is visible beneath the yellows.  The flower itself has not been touched since the initial layers of it were painted.

At 9 hours -

The background is just about finished at this point except for the shadow, and after I complete the flower, I may make slight adjustments.  As I added background layers, my hatching became more and more "tight" or closely overlapped.

Finished at 15 hours
