Two-Spotted Spider Mite

Example of Damage

These leaves are from two Chinese Wisteria plants.  The leaves on the left are from a plant infested with Two-Spotted Spider Mite.  The leaves on the right are normal healthy leaves.

Spider Mites are noticeable not only by the damage to the leaves, caused by the feeding of the mites on the plant juices, but also by webs in between leaves or where leaves meet the stems.  Spider mites inject their mouth parts into the leaves and removes plant juices.  After a while, these minute injection sites turn brown and hard.  An infestation such as the one on the left has been there long enough to greatly deprive the plant of nutrition.

Physical treatments for Spider Mites includes raising the humidity level and lowering temperature.  Biological controls include the use of beneficial predatory mites which will attack the spider mites, but not the plant or other aspects of the home.  Direct chemical treatments include the use of horticultural oils, insecticidal soap and sulfur. I use an organic garlic and cayenne pepper spray.  The recipe is available by clicking here. Inquire at your local nursery for further information prior to using these chemical methods or products.
